Hines Ward criticized by Reed

  • Posted on July 26, 2011 at 1:59 am

Ed Reed isn’t trying to cause trouble when he calls out Hines Ward. He thinks too much of his old rival as a player to disrespect him.

“We have to police each other when we’re on the football field,” Reed, a seven-time All-Pro, said Monday. “I’ve been playing against the guy for a long time now and we do have some great battles, but there’s a reason they put a rule in for Hines. Hines Ward JerseyYou can go back and watch the tape, the tape don’t lie, you can’t hit guys with the crown of your helmet.”

Last week Reed called Ward a dirty player.

“I love Hines as a player, and I told him that,” Reed said last week. “But I told him also for a long time, ‘You’re a dirty player because I know how you play.’ ”

“There’s a reason why Hines has been a great football player a great blocker in this league because how he plays, he plays hard,” Reed said. “You can’t take anything away from him. But when you’re dropping and hitting people with the crown of your helmet, those are type of things that need to be addressed.”

While Reed has publicly taken Ward’s playing style to task, on Monday he defended the perception and treatment of another Steelers star who has been in the news lately.

“I’ve been playing the game for a long time, I consider myself one smart player on the football field when it comes to trying to hit guys and trying not to take guys out,” he said. “I know how (Ward) plays and I feel like I can comment about it without being
disrespectful about it.”

Ravens’ Rice Has Good Reason To Criticize Hines Ward

  • Posted on July 23, 2011 at 1:53 am

Supporting Hines Ward Jersey is equal to support Hines Ward.

The recent spat of words between Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice and Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark over WR Hines Ward’s arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) had a serious background to what started it in the first place. Rice’s cousin was killed by a drunk driver over a dozen years ago, according to a story on NFL.com, referencing an article by the Baltimore Sun.

Rice is also a spokesperson in Maryland in a state-sponsored commercial against drunk driving. His own personal experience makes the topic one that he has every right to be outspoken on and had Clark known about Rice’s family tragedy, perhaps he would have just left it alone. Instead, he chose to respond, defending his teammate, which might have been admirable but certainly unnecessary had he be aware of the story behind Rice’s comments.

Too often, players around the league are unwilling to tolerate another’s comments, and use the media and especially Twitter to spout their venom towards their rivals, usually making more of a fool of themselves as they were attempting to do to their intended target. Once again, another member of the Pittsburgh Steelers makes just one more poor decision in the off season, joining Ward and James Harrison in the “think-before-you-speak-doghouse.”

Thoughts on Hines Ward’s arrest

  • Posted on July 15, 2011 at 7:57 am

Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward was arrested and charged with drunken driving early Saturday morning in Georgia.Ward was released on $1,300 bond.

Here are some thoughts on Ward’s arrest:

?This was a surprisingly irresponsible move by Ward, who is 35 and has been a consummate professional with the Steelers.Ward is entering his 14th season and has stayed out of trouble during his career.Ward recently gained a lot of popularity for his success winning “Dancing With The Stars.” Now,his name is in the news for the wrong reasons.
?It’s too early to speculate whether the NFL will come down on Ward. The league is in the middle of a lockout and may look into Ward’s case once it reaches a new collective bargaining agreement.Ward does not have prior off-the-field incidents, which helps his case.

?For the third year in a row,the Steelers fail to make it through the offseason without an off-the-filed incident involving a star player.Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assault two years in a row in 2009 and 2010.This year Ward is being charged for driving under the influence.Ward’s situation does not compare to Roethlisberger’s,but it still puts a bad light on the Steelers and their team captain.

Hines Ward Discusses Week One On ‘Dancing With The Stars’

  • Posted on July 6, 2011 at 7:32 am

The Times is pleased to have Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward guest-blogging for us while he competes on”Dancing With the Stars.”Every Wednesday,Ward,a Super Bowl MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion, will answer a few questions from Fabulous Forum editor Houston Mitchell and give some insight into the competition. Here are Ward’s thoughts about Week One,which he offered by e-mail.

Q: Have you ever watched”Dancing With the Stars”before this season?

A.I have. I have watched some of those episodes where the athletes have danced. I have seen Emmitt [Smith] win and watched big Warren Sapp. It looks easier than it really is being on the show and actually doing it now. I give those dancers a lot of credit. Especially all the ladies who have to wear high heels day in and day out. I don’t see how ya’ll do it. But I figured if big Warren Sapp can do it,then I certainly can. And so far,I am having a blast.

Q: When were you more nervous, before your first Super Bowl or before your dance Monday night?

A.You really can’t compare the two. I mean, being in my first Super Bowl,I can’t even describe the feeling. I just remember thinking about it right before going onto the field for the first time and how nervous I got. And I definitely got nervous on Monday night before my first dance. But my partner,Kym Johnson,is a great teacher and she just told me to go for it,so we did. I approached my preparation for the show the same way I approach my preparation for football. And I have a great coach for each. It’s just that one is a lot prettier than the other :) but I have mad respect for both.

Hines Ward’s Dancing Partner on DWTS Blogs

  • Posted on July 4, 2011 at 6:59 am

Kym Johnson, who will be dancing with Hines Ward on Dancing with the Stars,is blogging for OK! magazine, and she wrote the following as the two are working hard up to the shows premiere which is next week.

This season,I’m dancing with Hines Ward.I didn’t really know how good he was! He’s incredible,I really like having an athlete for a partner. He’s an incredible athlete. He’s really intelligent, quick at picking up all the steps and choreography.Footwork is amazing,I’m sure that comes from football,he never has danced before but he gets up early for practicing, and is just perfect partner to have.

One weakness of his is that if we do the dance too many times,he starts over-analyzing things, but that’s the athlete in him. It’s great that he’s so concerned about what he’s doing. He’s very visual, and is good at correcting his mistakes.corrects mistakes.

Even though Hines is not a small guy,he’s so graceful, and a natural rhythm—and he has this amazing smile! As long as he smiles while he’s out there,he’ll be fine. He’s got the happy football player thing going on.He’s easy to teach, and he looks natural, when he’s out there he can enjoy it.Since the show starts next week,it’s a lot of practice. We have one day off a week.Five hours a day.He didn’t expect it to be so hard-he said it didn’t look as difficult from what he saw on TV! He’s already got a good grasp on faster dances like Foxtrot and the quickstep, and a natural rhythm for the jive and ChaCha.

Hines Ward’s Education Background

  • Posted on July 1, 2011 at 7:40 am

Hines Ward is an American football player who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was voted the MVP of Super Bowl XL in 2005. In addition to playing professional football, he also played college football at the University of Georgia. EDUinReview will now take a look at this outstanding athlete’s education background.

Ward was born in Seoul, South Korea to a Korean mother and an African American father. The family moved to Atlanta when he was one-year old. When he was two-years old,his parents divorced and a court decided that Ward should be raised by his paternal grandmother because his mother did not speak English.

Ward attended high school at Forest Park High School in Forest Park,Georgia. While in high school,he played quarterback for the school’s football team and was voted the Clayton County Offensive Player of the Year twice.

In 1994, Ward started his college football career as a wide receiver for the University of Georgia. He had the second most career receptions at his school with 149 receptions and 1,965 yards. While at UGA, he earned his bachelor’s degree in consumer economics and was also a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

After college, he was picked to play for the Steelers in the third round of the draft. He is currently the longest-tenured player on the team and is considered to be one of the best wideouts due to his ability to catch the ball and block his opponents. However, he also has a bad habit of hitting defenders on their blind-side,earning him the title of the NFL’s dirtiest player twice.

Now, Ward is putting his football career on pause while he pursues a career in ballroom dancing. It was announced last month that Ward will be one of the contestants in the twelfth season of Dancing with the Stars.

Dancing With the Stars’winner Hines Ward planning touchdown dance for partner Kym Johnson

  • Posted on June 30, 2011 at 7:45 am

After 10 weeks of dominating the dance floor, Hines Ward and partner Kym Johnson took home the esteemed title of “Dancing With the Stars” champions for Season 12.

Zap2it was on the ballroom floor right after Hines and Kym got the news at the end of the two-hour finale, and he made it very clear to the press that he didn’t go into the finale assuming anything.

“I looked over and I saw Kirstie,” Hines says of the final moments, after Chelsea Kane had already been eliminated. “I thought, oh jeez, everybody loves Kirstie. But it comes down to voting… It was the fans.”

Hines appreciates the fans, though not as much as he does his partner. And she’ll be getting a fitting tribute in the fall when Hines resumes his full-time job as wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“I’m doing a tribute to Kym every time I score a touchdown,” he says. “You will see a ‘Dancing With the Stars’ routine somewhere in the end zone.”

Won’t that draw jokes from his teammates? “Now that I brought back this trophy, they can’t say anything.”

As for where the glittery prize is heading, Hines says he plans to put it right next to the Super Bowl MVP trophy in his house.
